Student/Parent Handbook

• The school year has 2 semesters (1st - Fall semester, 2nd - Spring semester).

• Based on local city school district's schedule, the first day of each semester will be adjusted and each semester consists of 14 weekly classes on Sunday

• Fall semester starts in the middle of August and takes a break on the Sunday during Labor day and Thanksgiving week. 

• Spring semester starts in the middle of January and takes a break on a Sunday during Spring break. Spring break schedule is to be decided based on school building situations.

• Classes are held every Sunday during 3-6pm, and consist of 3 periods. 

• Schedules for each semester are notified on school website and are subject to change due to situations. 

• School events: School events and plans are decided based upon teacher meetings. The school usually holds events including opening/closing ceremony and a cultural/historical event.  

• Outside events: Our school is a member of the National Association of Korean School. We participate in events, workshops, and conferences held by NAKS.

• PTA meeting: There is a PTA meeting per semester, in which Korean is used as a main language.

• Age requirement: All children must be at least *4 years old by September 1st of the academic year to be enrolled. We offer Kindergarten, Introductory and Korean1~6 classes for students from 5 years old to K-12, and additional Adult classes. 

• Existing students have priority in enrollment, then the remaining spots will be open to new students.

    • $20 for every new student

  • Tuition:​​ 

    • 1 student/family: $180

    • 2 students/family: $340

    • 3 students/family: $500

    • Textbooks: Overseas Korean Foundation supplied textbooks are included in tuition.

  • After semester starts: Refund provided after $20 processing fees + $10/week deduction. No refund 7 weeks after semester starts.

* Along with the age limit, a level test on the first day of school and the class teacher's deliberation will reflect on the child's enrollment.

• Each class has 6 students as minimum capacity and is adjustable within the maximum capacity of 15 students.  

• Class assignment is determined based on age and Korean fluency. It  is subject to change during the semester due to student’s adaptation, development, or accomplishment. Changes can be made if needed with the teacher’s recommendation/parents conference/approval by the Principal. 

• Class assignments is made temporarily during the teacher meeting before the first (Fall) semester. Then the adjustments are made based on the placement test on the first day of the semester.

• Class assignment from the 1st semester is maintained in the second (Spring) semester. Changes can be made if needed with the teacher’s recommendation/parents conference/approval by the Principal.​

• Available classes are subject to change every semester due to situation.

• Students can choose a new extracurricular activity class each semester. 

• All students enrolled will receive an email with information on newly available extracurricular classes.

• Students will make two choices for extracurricular activity classes. The choices must be for two different classes. If the student chose the same activities for both choices, the student will not be given the priority to the choices. 

• The students will be given the  priority to the choices in the order of request submission. The final decision will be made by the Principal and extracurricular teacher, based upon the student’s age and Korean fluency level.

• If there is a need for the class change during the semester, it will be done after a teacher/parent/principal conference and the final approval by the school principal. 

• For the student in 8th grade or higher who are in the highest level class excluding the Adult class, the student can be recommended for graduation by the teacher when completed appropriate achievement and meets one of the requirements below: 

  • Attended Columbus Korean School for 5 or more years with attendance rate of 75% or more. 

  • Has completed TOPIK exam with level 3 or higher.

  • NKT(NAKS Korean Test)

• Final decision will be made after the teacher meeting based on teacher’s recommendation. 

• TA (Teaching Assistant) should be a student in 8th grade/ 13 years old or higher, who is fluent in Korean for communicating and assisting during the class.  

• TAs will go through an interview with principal/vice principal, an orientation, and pledge to complete the duties diligently.

• The class that a TA serves is determined by Principal based upon teacher's need.

  • Annual recommendation for the Leadership Award, according to the rules by National Association of Korean School (NAKS). 

  • Volunteers hours can be approved for President's Volunteer Service Award application.
